There is a fine line between work and play being a photographer, which is what is so amazingly wonderful about our job. A client calls and asks you to spend a couple days in “X” city, making whatever photos you want as long as they somewhat fit the story. In general, that is all the 36 Hours series The New York Times is: tip-toeing that line.
I’ve done many of these now down here in Florida, and this time it was Naples, Fla., which I actually have been to quite a bit. Made for money and tourists, and tourists with money, it is a visual town, which is why the amazing shotoers over at The Naples Daily News (check recent NPPA wins) always crank out some amazing stuff which never seems be touristy at all. They have moved beyond the area’s obvious beauty and found really amazing stories to do. Hard thing to do when you live in such beauty everyday. I have the same problem in Sarasota most of the time.
Anyway, here’s to the journey. Even journeys to places already known. Love it.
The story ran today here and in print.
