I always find it ironic that I get all excited when the Travel editor calls from The New York Times and asks if I’m available.  I always say “of course,” hope for some far off land, and then I get the punchline: “We’re doing a story on Siesta Key.”  It’s great, don’t get me wrong, but I could walk to this beach.  Right now.  I guess that’s what comes with living in a Florida tourist town.  Someday, I’ll get the call to run off to Antarctica and that will teach me.

Essentially the story (which ran today in Escapes and be found here) focused in on the amazing white sand of Siesta Public Beach, which is absolutely insane.  It is 99% quartz, millions of years old, and randomly gets deposited here after making it’s start in the Appalachian mountains.  It stays cool year round, even in the dead of summer.  It is one of those things, though, that since I live here and am at that beach weekly for work, I never get to go just hang and really enjoy it.

Kind of like living in Las Vegas and not gambling.  What fun would that be?

My fav. beach in FL, Chip – nice work. Surprised none of the iconic, saturated lifeguard stands worked their way into your edit…
