I was on the way home tonight from an assignment when one random shot led me into about 3 hours of shooting graffiti cover-ups around Sarasota.  There is actual a graffiti eradication program through the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office which is really quick on covering up any scribblings or art that pops up around town.  Some of this I’m sure is their handiwork, but the rest I have to imagine are business owners just grabbing whatever paint can is closest to them and rolling it on.  There is part of me that understands it, but another part wonders why no one has matching paint for their walls and how a big swatch of random color is better than whatever some graffiti artist put up there.  Now that I write it, I think I just answered my own question.

I’m not sure what really drew me to it, but I am a fan of Rothko, and seeing this stuff made me smile a bit when I made that connection in my weird mind.  I’m going to print these on canvas and become a post-graffiti-abstract-expressionist.
